Standing proudly at the top of Norris Avenue in historic downtown McCook, Nebraska, The Old Post Office has served as one of the community’s most recognizable landmarks for more than a century.
Completed in 1916 and constructed of beautiful Indiana limestone, the building was originally built as a Federal Building, housing the Western Nebraska Federal Court and the Post Office for McCook, Nebraska. Its stately architecture, massive stone exterior, and commanding presence reflected the importance of McCook as a growing regional center during the early twentieth century.
For decades, the building housed the Federal Court for Western Nebraska along with the McCook Post Office. The building served as a key site for the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Nebraska, which held sessions there from 1916 to 1955. During the construction of the new Red Willow County Courthouse between 1926 and 1927, county offices temporarily operated from within the Federal Building.
In the 1980s, a new post office facility was constructed several blocks west of the original location, bringing an end to the building’s long service as McCook’s post office. After sitting vacant for a number of years, the structure was eventually purchased by David and Sharon Huegel, who recognized both its historical importance and architectural beauty.
Today, the building serves as the home of Huegel’s Hutch Antiques, where visitors can explore an ever-changing collection of antiques, collectibles, historical items, and curiosities housed within one of Nebraska’s most distinctive historic buildings.
The Old Post Office is also significant as the place where Old Post Office Postcards was founded by their son, Nathan Huegel — a business specializing in antique postcards, historical photography, and paper ephemera with a strong focus on Nebraska history. Nathan’s business is now located in Lincoln, Nebraska.
